Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI) was the first television station in Indonesia to air on August 24, 1962. Its first broadcast aired on 17th Independence Day Ceremony of the Republic of Indonesia from the State Palace of Jakarta. The First broadcast was still in black and white. TVRI then broadcasts the Asian Games that held in Jakarta.
TVRI monopolized TV broadcasting in Indonesia until 1989 when RCTI, the first private television in Jakarta, and the second one, SCTV in 1990 in Surabaya.
TVRI Central Station is located in Jakarta, and TVRI has relay stations in several cities in Indonesia. In addition to TVRI Jakarta Central Station, there is also TVRI Regional Station in several provincial capitals in Indonesia. TVRI Regional Station in addition to relaying TVRI Jakarta, also has local programs (including local news) at certain hours.
